Immunizations Quality Care Objectives

Date: 06/24/20

Helping Your KanCare Patients Achieve “A Healthier Today, Better Tomorrow”

We are asking for your help, as a Sunflower participating provider, to ensure our pediatric members are seen regularly for immunizations.

Quality Care Objectives

It is important that Sunflower Health Plan and its participating providers work together to ensure our members be seen regularly to meet their needs. Quality healthcare provided to our membership is measured through HEDIS quality metrics.

Childhood Immunization Status-Members under 2 Years

This measure assesses the percentage of children 2 years of age during the measurement year who received the following vaccinations on or before their 2nd birthday:

  • Four diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTAP)
  • Three polio (IPV)
  • One measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)
  • Three H influenza type B (HiB)
  • Three hepatitis B (HepB)
  • One chicken pox (VZV)
  • Four doses of pneumococcal conjugate (PCV)
  • One hepatitis A (HepA)
  • Two or three rotavirus (RV)
  • Two influenza (flu) vaccines

This measure follows the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines for immunizations.

Immunizations for Adolescents-Members under 13 Years

This measure assesses the percentage of adolescents 13 years of age during the measurement year who received the following vaccinations on or before their 13th birthday: one dose of meningococcal vaccine and one tetanus, diphtheria toxoids and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, and have completed the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series. This measure follows the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) guidelines for immunizations.

HPV vaccine: Since 2015, the Kansas’ Medicaid Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) have collaborated to increase the rate of KanCare members completing the HPV vaccination series.

Suggested clinician strategy:

  • Clinician endorsement is the primary reason parents will vaccinate.
  • Vaccinations beginning at ages 9-12 bring better outcomes.
  • Bundling HPV with other adolescent vaccines demonstrates to parents the importance of HPV vaccine as part of adolescent vaccination.
  • Review immunization record ahead of all sick and well visits and strategize to address immunizations at each visit.

Immunization Registry

Are you a part of the state’s immunization registry? Sign up to use WebIZ, Kansas’ statewide immunization information system. It is a secure, web-based quality-assurance tracking tool used by public and private sites in efforts to communicate the immunization status of members.
